What is it?

A traditional Battenberg. Almond flavoured sponge glued together with apricot jam and covered with home made marzipan.

Battenberg Cake (aliases: Domino Cake, Church Window Cake, Neapolitan Roll) is an unapologetically and uniquely British confection, having morphed into a confectionery symbol of the country since its creation in the late 1800s. The charming checkerboard sponge cake interior and jam-laced marzipan wrapping makes it fit for both fancy occasions and tea time.



Battenberg cake is said to have been invented in 1884, in honour of the marriage of Queen Victoria's granddaughter, Victoria of Hesse-Darmsadt, to the German prince Louis of Battenberg. Like Coronation Chicken, created for our Queen's coronation nearly 70 years later, it was so popular it never went away.
